Services
Hi, my name is Peter Duffy and we have been remodeling homes in the greater Boston area since 1984. We hope that the information on this site will help you to make an informed decision regarding your home remodeling project. We also hope that the photos of our past projects will inform and inspire you regarding any remodeling project you may have know or in the future.
Bathroom remodeling is another specialty of ours. We will redesign what you have or simply replace the fixtures and faucets, updating your current design. For bath fixtures we use Kohler, American Standard, Elger and Toto, to name a few, as well as Moen, Delta, Price Pfizer and Symmons for tub and shower valves and lavatory faucets.
On our first visit we will sit down with you and in about an hour's time will come up with a plan that is creative and economical. We will go over the kitchen and/or bath in question and see where improvements in design and functionality can be implemented for a reasonable cost. At the end of our first meeting you will have a good sense of the project design; products to bring your ideas to fruition, such as cabinets, counters, flooring, appliances, lighting, windows, doors and walls.Next, we will prepare a budget that takes into consideration your economic needs and desires.

I have done two projects with Peter for well into the six figures total cost. Feels like I have spent a year of my life working with him. To summarize the key points based on our experience: 1) Most of the Reno work is done well, we would probably give it a B or B- in aggregate, but 2) If you are particular (and we are) you will catch flaws that you don't like, which brings us to 3) you will annoy him because his ideal state is he does the work to his standard and then you leave it alone - debate about work quality and redoing sub-par work (which will happen) is met with prickly resistance. Peter is very responsive to questions, however. 4) His crew does not protect new surfaces, you will need to spend hundreds cleaning new surfaces or learn to live with the damage - This is so frustrating because it's incredibly preventable. 5) The painter he works with is quite good, as are the plastering contractors. 6) I would not trust the tile work ever again, he did not use underlayment and now our tile is cracking and we paid for nice marble tile in our shower that failed (paid out of pocket to correct).

This is unacceptable. Peter wouldn't replace the tile, so again you either need to learn to live with it or overpay for someone to fix the work. 7) Things can get really complicated working with him over a long period of time. Peter did not finish our project: cracked hinges, doors that won't latch shut, unpainted trim, last few bits of tile, etc.

He claims this is because we didn't pay him but he dragged his feet for over a month coming back for a final touch up and I'm personally not dumb enough to hand over a final check before the work is done - I thought this was the standard but he was insulted by it despite the fact that I paid him chunks in the tens of thousands on demand throughout the project. 8) Peter will encourage you not to permit the work.

We permitted ours and I had to facilitate it with the town myself, because the 'project manager' he hired dropped the ball for several months. It also became clear that Peter didn't follow the plan that the inspector approved - I had to pay for 'tempering service' on new bathroom windows out of pocket. I would work with Peter if you're comfortable with the above, and if you know what you will get out of it.

All in all we like a lot of the work, we enjoy many of the new elements of our home that he helped us bring to life, but there are lingering issues that taint the experience and make us wish he could have conducted himself more professionally. I don't think Peter would work with us again, it's a shame because there were certainly some good moments throughout the latest project work and it ended on a really sour note which caused the project to fizzle out and nosedive in spectacular fashion.

I had Peter and his crew renovate my bathroom and put a floor into the unfinished attic of my condo unit. I knew when I met him that he was a no-nonsense, highly professional contractor. In his estimate for the bathroom, he was very clear in delineating our respective responsibilities. The bathroom turned out pretty much exactly how I had conceived it, and I attribute a lot of that to Peter and his crew's experience and skill, and his ability to listen, ask the right questions, and be available for questions from me.

I was very busy at the time the work was being done, and I hugely appreciated Peter's inclination to take care of things that I simply did not have the time or energy to handle. And, I did enjoy talking with him, about non-project related stuff. All in all a very pleasant experience with the desired outcome.

Peter recently finished two jobs for me. Refinishing a partially finished basement and adding a separate office in the basement. Peter and his team (especially Oliver) did a great job and we are very pleased with the outcome. Peter has years of experience and had some great advice during the process which really made a difference. They made a beautiful built- in entertainment center for us from a picture I gave them from pottery barn.

We get compliments all the time. The team is focused on your satisfaction, even repainting and touching up areas where my (over) attention to detail took over. Overall, we are very happy with the job they did and will be using them again in the future.

Peter and his team did a very extensive renovation of our home: building new attic stairs, completely redoing two bathrooms, kitchen counters, flooring throughout, chimney removal, knocking down walls, and adding AC. Plus odds and ends. He did a great job and we've been very happy with the work. He actually did most of it while we were out of state, and he was super easy to communicate with and trustworthy to manage things in our absence.

His subcontractors are all as wonderful as Peter--super responsive, professional, and expert. We've recommended him to others and would use him again for another job without hesitation.

Peter completed two jobs in my house and both were done with great craftsmanship. He finished our basement and installed a new doorway along with some other repairs throughout our house. He was very professional and provided an estimate that was true to the final cost and timeline. He cleaned up the job beautifully after each day which was also great. We were very happy with his work and will definitely use him again and recommend him to others.

We hired Peter for a complete gut job & remodel of our bathroom. As first time home buyers, we were nervous as to what to expect and afraid of being taken advantage of. Peter responded to our request for a quote quickly and talked us about all the possible options to maximize space. Throughout the remodel, Peter gave updates as far as timeline and answered all of our questions. Peter was responsive to phone calls & emails. He is a perfectionist which is shown in his work. We will be definitely calling Peter back for any future work we need in our house.

Things started out well enough; Peter responded to my email and we agreed for him to come by and give an estimate later in the week. Unfortunately he neither showed up or called to cancel. Like the other poster, I opted to move on.

Peter and his team were a perfect fit for our projects. Photos coming soon. First, we had a small (very narrow) laundry room that we wanted to make more livable. He stacked our new washer/dryer, reworking the plumbing and venting, built a door around it, and turned the extra space into a separate closet by building a wall in between. He made suggestions that kept the cost down, which I appreciated considering another contractor had quoted a crazy price for similar work. Second, we wanted to renovate our bathroom entirely.

He and his crew stripped out our old bathtub, floor, tile, etc. and replaced it with a beautiful shower, glass sliding shower door, brand-new tile and vanity, space heater, toilet, and also installed a vent in the ceiling. He hit our budgets and timelines. This was our first home-improvement project, and it felt like a nice split between what we did on our own (bought our own shower door, tile, ceiling vent/light, grout, vanity, etc.) and the work Peter offered.

We did not have an interior designer, so it was up to us to find the right paint color, accessories, and the like. Peter supplied the shower transition tile, the space heater, all construction materials, doors, the drain, shower pan, and other parts. He outlined what we were responsible for sourcing in the initial proposals, so it was clear and easy to manage. e.g.

Home Depot installed our carpet in the small room, not Peter. Easy. Finally I should note that he was flexible with problems we created, for example we sent back a faucet that had the wrong finish, so Peter came back out later to install that piece. He also backs up his warranty, as we had some of the paint on our bathroom ceiling start to crack - he corrected it quickly.

I wish I could add stars to this rating. My first experience with Peter Duffy and Remodeling Boston was a very modest project. The latest one was far greater in scope and effort: we needed significant woodwork removed, replaced, and painted around the third floor of the house. Peter's management and attention to quality detail was the same as it had been in my first experience. Peter quite simply took care of ensuring that we came in on time and on budget without compromising our long-term results.

And again, I am particular and I looked closely. Peter also navigated the different personalities of his team, the specialty contractors, and the other owners. It certainly made the process far easier as I always felt confident about progress and results. All that to say, I will again recommend Remodeling Boston without hesitation!

I will share the frustration of the lack of communication. Actually absence. We were scheduled to have work done, only to experience delay - and a couple of weeks of NO Response to emails, phone or texts. I contracted with someone else - who was fantastic and professional and quality - while still trying to reach Peter. No luck. My recommendation is to save your frustration and call another contractor. Or call me and I will be glad to recommend another.

I had a $3K work to do in my house that was supposed to last around 1 week. I have had very poor customer service along the way, very poor interactions, and felt there was no interest for my project because it was so "small". I had to wait 7-10 days to get any reply by email. Waited weeks to get a proposal. When I called I was met with a laconic "I'll send it to you today", and had to wait another 2 or 3 days to finally get the document.

The works were supposed to start mid-September and were then postponed of 2 weeks without explanation. The day before the works were supposed to start, he sent me an email at 7pm on Sunday to postpone. This kind of last minute change should be communicated by phone not by mail! And how couldn't this be communicated earlier? Who organizes his schedule on Sunday night for the week?

Then again the night before the works were supposed to start he cancelled the works.without any explanation. I would strongly recommend to avoid this company if you want your job to be done.

My wife and I recently hired Peter and his team to do a total remodel of our kitchen and overall we are very satisfied with the results. From the beginning he was responsive to our questions and requests for design assistance. He came to our house a few times to discuss options, cabinet brands, appliances, the works. We originally talked with Peter in the fall only to table the project over the winter.

When we later contacted him in the spring he picked up the project proposal right where we left off. Throughout the project he was very clear on next steps and any upcoming decisions that needed our input. He went out of his way to work with us when our cabinet and granite companies had issues and when we made minor scope changes. For instance, when our granite guys flaked out on our templating and weren't able to fabricate until later than expected, Peter installed temporary countertops and reconnected the plumbing so that we could have a functional kitchen during the two week wait. I'd strongly recommend him to friends and family in the area who are looking for similar work. I included a picture of part of the finished work. We couldn't be happier.

I will start by saying that we did not go with Peter so I can't tell how the actual work is, however, we had a great experience with Peter speccing out the work and that is what this review is for. Peter was a little hard to get hold of, but he made time for us, and spent a lot of time discussing the project. Ours was a tiny project and so I was impressed that he spent the time.

It was a challenging project, involving retrofitting a dishwasher into a quaint 1960s kitchen. Peter spent a lot of time discussing different options. He came up with an innovative idea - placing the dishwasher in its own cabinet on the opposite wall (which was free) but we decided not to do it. I liked Peter because he was very measured in his approach.

He never tried to upsell us things and his quotes sounded very reasonable. He also suggested things (including doing without a dishwasher!) that was best from our point of view but would make him no money! Again, I can not judge the quality of his work, but he spent a lot of time with us, and was very careful and measured.

Peter handled our kitchen renovation and was the smartest, most reasonably priced contractor we've worked with during 30 years of fixing up old houses. (We're on our third.) He was responsive, helpful without being overbearing, and a font of good ideas about the complicated issues we faced--he has an artist's eye and a carpenter's clever hands.

Unlike other contractors we contacted, he didn't didn't insist on charging us big bucks up front just to bat around ideas and help us refine the basic design we'd figured out. When problems and surprises reared their ugly heads, he repeatedly came up with good solutions, some of which he executed himself. He's remarkably hands-on for a veteran contractor, doing parts of the plumbing, carpentry, etc. himself.

That means he stayed on top of details, and the inevitable problems that arise in a major renovation, in a way that doesn't happen with general contractors who simply cruise through now and then as their sprites do all the work. He's also a perfectionist, insisting on getting things right that we sometimes didn't even notice weren't perfect. And he's the only contractor we know who listens to classical music while he works. A class act all the way, he will henceforth be our fixer-upper of choice.

Peter helped give us the ideal kitchen for our first home! We hired him at first just to expand the kitchen's small entry way but thought he was so thoughtful, responsive and thorough that we hired him to do the floors, cabinets, and tile backsplash as well. He was a fantastic resource throughout the renovation, answering not only our kitchen questions but any home operating questions we had as first time homeowners.

His advice was always honest - trying to save us money while maintaining quality - and the work he did was meticulous. We plan to hire him again soon to do more to improve our new home. We highly recommend "letting Duffy do it!"

Peter did a great job on my kitchen. I didn't use a designer, but he was very willing to use my self-drawn plans and listen to the intent behind them. I valued his expertise when he suggested changes that would make the project even better. When the unexpected appeared after demolition, he was flexible and rolled with the changes. He's available and communicative by email and text. Highly recommended.

This is the first time I have ever written a review yet based on what Peter Duffy put me through I feel it is important to share my experience to protect others from this situation. I innocently called Peter to provide me an estimate to complete a bathroom remodel. Peter came to my house on a recent morning, saw the bathroom and had the audacity to steel my house key.

Shortly after he left, I realized what he did and called him to ask him to return my key immediately. He continued to hang up on me. When I kept calling, he finally agreed to return it the next morning. Of course he didn't return my key the next morning and I continued to call him and send emails to his website. He ignored every message I left for him.

It wasn't until I got the BOSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT and a CRIMINAL ATTORNEY involved and they started contacting him that he realized he wasn't going to get away with stealing my key and finally returned it. I tried to notify the Better Business Bureau but he is not accredited through that agency. Save yourself trouble and stay away from Peter Duffy.
