It was about 3:30 PM on 3/31 when I realized my aging water heater was not working. Went to check the pilot, which was out and would not re-ignite. I called in a claim through my coverage with Duke and it was promptly approved. They provided the name of Modern Plumbing as the supplier to handle the repair/replacement. However, by this point it was just after 5.
In desperation to have hot water I found their number and called. They had already closed for the day, but had an option for emergency after hours. I selected it expecting a voicemail that would likely not be checked until next day. To my delight Jamie picked up immediately and began assisting me. There was not a team available to do it that night, but she walked me through collecting all the information they would need. Also, she answered various somewhat related plumbing questions as well.
I submitted it to her via text and she opened the case for me that evening. The next morning I got a call from Jeff who had my replacement water heater and was arriving shortly. I had not drained the 50 gallon tank for them, located outside in a water hut, in advance so that was the only part that took any time. They were courteous in answering questions and even went so far as to help me adjust my house pressure valve. My water was hot within about an hour and has been great since. I highly recommend this business and had an excellent experience with them.

Price was very high. Assessor quoted scope of work that did not occur. Said they would run a new power from breaker box to unit. That did not happen. They installed a junction box and ran a short line from an existing line and charged $535 for less than an hour's work. It was a gouge and a rip off. When questioned about the charge the supervisor was rude.

This company is shady and if you have a home warranty, they will try to get money from you and the home warranty both. I had never had to pay more than my service fee for any repairs before, but they were going to charge me $1300 to replace my hot water heater. Who knows what they were going to charge the home warranty company. When I pressed a bit on this, they indicated that there were things that weren't covered by the home warranty.
And while that may be true, I really didn't think there would be $1300 worth of additional charges. I ended up calling a local plumber with really good reviews who came out the next morning and told me he could do the job later that day for a total of $1400 -- and that's without any warranty! So I told him to go ahead and do it. I then let my warranty company know since the issue was fixed and they actually sent me a check for a good portion of that.
I can't remember how much they paid, but I want to say it was between $700 and $800 they sent me, which means it ended up costing me about $600 instead of $1300! I had also asked this company about upgrading my unit and they said I had a 40 gallon tank and that to go to a 50 gallon tank would be an extra $625, with some of that being inspection fees and such for the different size tank. Well, it turns out I already had a 50 gallon tank, and when I went back and looked at their estimate they even took a picture of the plate that showed it was a 50 gallon tank!
That would have been an expensive mistake that would have raised my total cost to nearly $2000! I guess over $2000 if you throw in my $75 service fee. If you get assigned this company by your warranty company, I would recommend you request a different service provider.

Sent to me through my home warranty provider to assess slow drains throughout my home. Technician spent the entire appointment addressing one slow drain in the bathroom. When he finished, I asked him lots of questions and he assured me that all my drains would be working. BUT he failed to test them all himself. I should have checked myself, because once he left, I realized that the kitchen and shower were not fixed at all, still draining just as slowly as before.
I contacted the company and was told there are no warranties on their services, and that with my old plumbing, the technician could only make a temporary fix. I understand that temporary doesn't mean forever, but he literally did not fix all of the drains. So that's not temporary. That's incomplete! I tried contacting customer service multiple times, and eventually ended up on a 30 minute conference call with the supervisor / owner, my technician and others who did not identify themselves, as they tried to work out the problem.
I found it unprofessional to include a client on a call like that. They were also patronizing in their explanation of my old home's system, and dismissive of my questions. In the end, the supervisor hung up on me without addressing my primary concern - why did the technician assure me he did a temporary fix on all my slow drains, when that was not true? I would not recommend this company because I found their work and statements to be deceptive, and overall my experience was a waste of $$ and time

I found that from the beginning the staff was very helpful, they walked me through each step necessary to get my water heater serviced. The service men knew what they were doing and quickly diagnosed and replaced my water heater. In less than a week the work was finished. Service: Water heater installation

The technicians were nice but, they came the first time because I thought there was something wrong with my water heater and they said they checked it out and it was fine, but I had a leak in a pipe in the adjacent wall. They fixed the leak but left the pilot off on my water heater. Less than 2 months later my water heater began leaking water from a large rusted out hole in the side and I had to get a new one.
How they could've missed this just 2 months earlier when they "thoroughly checked it out" is beyond me. They replaced the old water heater in good time and it was a very cold, rainy day so I don't blame them for not doing a perfect job of sweeping up debris when they were done. The supervisor or whoever the woman I spoke on the phone with, would not admit to any responsibility for any issues like the pilot light or the missing of my rusted out, 16 year old water heater. She was very difficult to deal with.

Company was assigned to me via First American. My first contact with them was a VM left after hours that they were reaching out but technically close and not to call back. Finally got an appointment schedule (afternoon 12-5, would call in advance). Afternoon completely wasted. No plumber, no call to even notify a schedule change. Requested FA reassigned to different contractor. I understand it is a difficult time, but its a difficult time for consumers too. I appreciate the very wasted work day!

Horrendous! I had been a repeat customer with Modern Plumbing and backflow for quite a few years. Unfortunately after this last attempted repair, I will never use them again. One plumber came to service a leak with a sewer ejection pump. He evaluated the leak, took pictures, and left stating that the office would email me with a quote to repair the leak.
We paid for that service call at the time of service. One week later, I received an email with a quote for about $300. I received no response when I emailed back asking to schedule for the repair. So I called the office and verbally confirmed the same $300 quote that was in the email and scheduled the repair. A different plumber came and saw the pump.
He stated that he needed the full payment in advance which I gave him by credit card. He then had to leave because he stated he didn't have the correct parts to repair the pipe. When he returned 25 minutes later, he told me that it was going to be an additional $500 to replace the pipe. I called the office to question why this additional cost was not even a consideration within the written quote.
Nothing had been taken apart or removed since the first service call. The supervisor was rude. I expressed that I was frustrated and felt like I was being taken advantage of. So she stated that she "did not need my business and they are booked well in advance." Then she told me that she "hit the refund button." Not only did they not honor their written quote, none of the plumbers wore shoe covers. Mud was tracked in both times. Save yourself a headache and muddy carpets and avoid Modern Plumbing. They are not like they used to be.

Had a plumber come out and we used our home warranty who referred them to us. We paid for the charge. My husband wanted to talk with me before cutting holes in the walls and the plumber stated we will not be charged for another trip with in 30'days to come out to do the work. The guy also stated there is a leak but he can't find out exactly where it is at.
So he was going to cut every where until he found it. So my husband wanted to make sure it was ok to do so. We have them on camera in our home and he clearly said that. That if we called back with in 30 days and said we will NOT charge you for another call out to do the work we will just charge you for the work done. We called back in 2 days to schedule for them to do the work.
It took them 3 days to return our call to tell us they are going to charge out another $125 fee. I said no because we were not told that. That lady said " I am the owner and he DID NOT SAY AND I AM TELLING YOU NO" I responded well how about this "we will never use you guys again. And I will make sure to review you" She said I was Threatening her and the call Is recorded and hung up.
In no way was I threatening or mean. I said he did not say that and I have it videoed from my home security cameras. This company is extremely rude. The owner and careless and ultimately non professional. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. They tell you miss information, like to add charges and refuse to help in any situation. If I can give them no stars I will

In our experience, the Front Office Staff including Chrissy are unreliable, untruthful, unresponsive, rude and unprofessional. They can't keep an appointment and could not care less. Better off going elsewhere. They refused to allow me to voice my concerns to the General Manager or Office Manager. I guess they have a significant Covid Problem based on what Chrissy stated.

**If you have been threatened by this business, please read** We have worked with technicians with the company for the past year as they were a provider through our Old Republic home warranty. The technicians are incredibly respectful, timely, and kind. We were told by their technicians that our inverters needed to be repaired which was outside our home warranty so we paid out of pocket half a grand to fix.
After the work was complete, we noticed a leak and had two different technicians come today. They told us that the issue was NOT the inverter, in fact it was the shower valve. The technician advised me to call their corporate office to get a refund for the work done on the inverter and set up an appointment to fix the REAL issue. Upon calling, the supervisor (who was a woman, please search Supervisor in these reviews to show others who had the same experience) threatened to call the police on us for asking to resolve the issue.
They then hung up on us and refused to have a civil conversation and hung up on us again. They made it seem as though I was threatening them but I was cool, calm, and collected - it was clear upon researching reviews that this SUPERVISOR does this to all customers. Since this experience, I have filed a case with the Better Business Bureau, tweeted at Old Republic, and have written this review.
I am considering calling the police to report fraud and harrassment. Please follow this reivew if you have also been acosted by this business, this is unacceptable behavior by the SUPERVISOR, not technicians, and customers should not be treated this way.

Home Warranty company selected this company to come repair a broken water line and toilet leak and I couldn't be happier. Great customer service began from minute one as customer service rep on phone was attentive and understanding of severity of issue (had no water in house due to water leak). She expedited my case on the schedule and kept me informed of scheduled appointment. Things only got better from there.
Our technician, Cindy, showed up early, expertly diagnosed the issue, and made the repairs in a professional, quality and timely way. Less than an hour later, we had water, a fixed water line and a perfectly working toilet. I couldn't have been more impressed with Cindy's craftmanship. I would recommend Cindy and the team at Modern Plumbing and Backflow for any needed work!

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE After coming to my home to diagnose a problem involving a shower, we received a quote that indicated "a modification" was needed. When we called in to get an explanation, Jaime, who indicated that she is the owner of the company, was VERY unprofessional in her tone and the handling of my questions. She refused to explain the quote and refused to fully hear the questions that I was asking.
She kept interrupting me as I was trying to ask a question and gain clarification, and then when I told her that she was not allowing me to answer her questions, she refused to complete the work as requested. Certainly, good customer service involves allowing customers to get clarification on quotes, especially when they exceed hundreds of dollars. It is my opinion that this company and its owner are very unprofessional and I am happy to find a more reputable and professional plumber to work with.

I've used this company through my home warranty on 3 occasions now. They are always awesome! Appointments are made quickly, kept, techs always call then they're on the way. If a follow up appointment is needed, they set all expectations and exceed them! I highly recommend Modern Plumbing! Services: Drain unblocking, Shower repair, Pipe repair, Toilet repair

Horrible customer service! The manager is rude, curses at you, and refuses to finish the job they started. We have a home warranty and they said everything was covered, yet they didn't do all the work that they tried to charge the warranty company, and told us afterwards that it wasn't covered. (The warranty company said over and over that it was, even in a 3 way call with the manager.) the manager than tried to lie and say we were threatening her, and told the warranty company that they would not be finishing the job that they were already paid to do.
This was our second time dealing with this company, and both times they tried to tack on as many additional items to that weren't even necessary to fix the problem. I don't recommend ever doing business with this horrible company!

First, Andy was right on time which we really appreciate. He was sensitive to the problems of working inside a home during COVID by wearing a mask. Our problem was that we had a leak but we didn't know where it was. He listened to our concerns, looked at the OWASA usage charts, and then methodically began to go under our house and through our house until he found the problem. He also made some small adjustments to other water-based appliances, just in case. We will call Andy again. What a nice, educated, young professional he is!

They ordered the wrong part 2 times. Had to come out 3 times and still can't get it right. Had to call because they forgot about my service after the first appointment. Owner called and threatened to file a defamation lawsuit for untrue claim. Not sure how any of this is untrue because this is what happened and I have proof of communication and what happened.
They also said that they wouldn't be servicing me any longer. Great customer service! They also said the review has been up for several months even though I only posted this last week. Don't let them bully you with their scare tactic.

Winston and Tom came to my home today. They very respectful and professional. They removed the old water heater and install the new one. I appreciate the fact that they were very friendly and knowledgeable in making sure the job was done right! They cleaned up after themselves as well. Also Winston and Tom wore their masks. Thanks guys!

We had a great experience all around working with Modern Plumbing to replace our water heater. The office staff was extremely attentive working with our home warranty company, doing ALL the follow up and making the appointments. 2 professional techs, Winston and Adrian, came out to do the replacement. It was not an easy task as our crawl space is very tight and it was a hot and rainy day. They showed up on time, did an excellent job and had a great attitude the entire time. We couldn't be more happy!

Discovered a leak in an upstairs toilet by spotting a water stain on the first floor ceiling late one night. Contacted Modern Plumbing and advised them of the issue and it wasn't an emergency. They got me on the schedule the next day. They were prompt, considerate, and thorough. Walked me through the issue and the remedy in a professional manner, and quickly fixed the leak. Absolutely would recommend them.

Beware of Modern Plumbing, my husband called and asked for a quote to fix 7 dripping faucets in our bathrooms. The lady that answered the phone and scheduled the call told him it would be $115.00 per hour labor and the cost of parts. When repairman arrived without masks, gloves or shoe coverings, we asked them to wear them which they did at our request.
After looking at the sinks, they went out to the truck for parts and came back in to tell us it would be $145.00 per faucet plus the cost of parts and $115.00 per hour labor charge. If you use them, get a firm quote in writing before you engage their services.

Our two toilets were clogged. When flushed or plunged water came up through the drain of my bathtub/shower. We are elderly and medically compromised and as such have not been out for over two months, nor have we allowed anyone into our house for the same time. We have a home warranty. The warranty company sent Modern Plumbing and Backflow to our house.
I answered the door wearing a mask. Neither of the plumbers wore a mask and entered our house. After about an hour of snaking through one of the toilets they were unsuccessful in relieving the clogged drains. They told me they would return 'sometime next week.' They left us with no use of our toilets, other than a third toilet in the basement, which they told us would also clog up eventually.
This was totally unacceptable. The next day I called my own plumber, who came immediately and cleaned out the entire system in about two hours, including re-installing the toilet that the previous plumbers left off. I would NOT recommend Modern Plumbing and Backflow to my worst enemy, which, upon reading this review, will more than likely be Modern Plumbing and Backflow.

This is a great company to service your plumbing needs! They are friendly, helpful, arrive on time, and even have weekend appointments. After having another plumber try to fix our leaking shower twice without satisfaction, Modern Plumbing took care of it in one visit. I'll be using them for all my plumbing needs!

As a matter of background information, I was introduced to Modern Plumbing as a result of an optional water heater repair/replacement program I have through Duke Energy. I thought I'd never need it, but sure as the sunrise occurs, a few days ago (as of this writing), I started having thermostat issues with my hot water heater. Modern plumbing sent out a tech to check everything over and the next thing I knew, it needed replacement.
On Friday the 23rd of August, two young, enthusiastic young professionals - Winston (the main tech) and David (an apprentice) arrived in the afternoon to replace our water heating unit. Before they even arrived, Winston gave me a call indicating they were on their way. I could tell by Winston's tone and speaking manner that he was a professional and very people-oriented.
As an aside, many businesses and employees often overlook the reality that the very first contact with a customer (or prospective customer) can set the tone for either a one-and-done interaction, or an ongoing customer/business relationship. Needless to say, thanks to Winston and David, I was very impressed. As is customary for a job like this, it took around 2 hours for Winston and David to replace my 50 Gallon water heater.
During that time I asked many questions and watched (mainly for curiosity sake) as Winston not only installed the unit, but also observed - as if he were an instructor at a Tech school or Community College - as he demonstrated admirable instructional techniques while showing David the ropes. He was a joy to watch and I gained a lot of respect for Winston. David was also exceptionally courteous and attentive to the job at hand.
What was really nice was to see their young ages - so professional, courteous, and precise with what they were doing. What a refreshing difference to see men like this as opposed to some of the many young "snow-flakes" that I come in contact with around town - sigh. To be honest, prior to my dealings with Modern Plumbing and Backflow, I never knew who they were.
When I had other plumbing issues, I tended to call other plumbers. So the greatest compliment I can advance is that in the future, when I run into plumbing issues, I plan on calling Modern Plumbing - it's that simple. And quite frankly, I'll ask for Winston and if David is still apprenticing with Winston, I'll ask that he tag along also. That's perhaps the greatest compliment I can give to a company. Well done Winston and David from Modern Plumbing and Backflow. Enthusiastically written. Ben Herrmann Master Gunnery Sergeant, US Marine Corps (Retired) Fuquay Varina, NC

Use caution if your home warranty company sends Modern Plumbing and Backflow. After taking my check covering the deductible, the technician cut a hole in my wall, indicated the work would not be covered by the warranty company, and demanded cash payment on the spot. Modern Plumbing had not even contacted the warranty company to see what was covered and was not.
It was a total shake down. Why not collect immediate cash from the homeowner, than wait for a claim from the warranty company. But then what is a warranty for? I called the warranty company and during the service call, the technician drove away without announcement. No receipt, no follow-up. Just a hole in my wall. I read some other YELP reviews on Modern Plumbing, and with little surprise, many described a similar story. You have a right to deny the provider being sent by your home warranty company. Do some research before you set the appointment. Use only reputable companies.

Warning long post because I like to tell the entire story. Stay away from this company! They are scammers to the highest level and very unprofessional. My water in the house stopped working suddenly after a bathroom remodel. My home warranty company sent modern plumbing to diagnose the problem. The guy arrived the next day around 2pm and I was told there was major issues and it would take 5 hours to complete. Rebuilding 2 toilets, running new lines, expansion heater, new valves the whole works.
So we opted to wait until monday and wanted to make sure the issue was covered from the warranty. So we get a call stating the warranty will not cover any of the job and get an email quote of upwards of $800! Well i state that i want to get the reason NOTHING is covered, so i opted to contact my warranty company. Next thing you know the plumber is on the phone trying to do the job.
He stated he got "quotes" on parts and broke down everything. I asked why i would have 2 barand new toilets rebuilt for $300 each, when a new toilet is cheaper. He told me i was welcome to shop around and I again say im trying to reach my warranty company and i will call tomorrow and let them know If we will proceed. The guy is nice and says ok. I immediately get a call from a very rude woman who questioned who my "husband " was and if in fact was my husband.
I tries to explain I was waiting for confirmation from the warranty company and would be in touch the next day. She tried to tell me my husband authorized it and i need to check with him because obviously we don't communicate and she has emails to prove he made the appointment. (He requested a quote not an appointment) At this point she tells me she purchased parts and im responsible and in her household her husband doesn't need her permission to get things fixed and that's why dur has water and i don't.
Well fast forward i speak to the warranty company and they haven't even made a decision on the claim! They send out a new plumber the next day and BOOM problem fixed in 30 minutes. Fully covered and all it was was trash in my supply lines. Run don't walk! If i didn't question them, we would have been taken for fools and out almost $900 for a $75 job Shame on them

Very upset and unhappy. Told me we needed to shell out 1300 for a new water heater because the heating elements were "fried". They made sure our warranty was voided by writing false report. Not sure what their agenda was. Turns out after second opinion, everything is working just fine, just needed a new motherboard. The guy looked me in my face and told me that everything was ruined.
The second opinion guy told us this is the second time in a week this has happened with this company. According to him they quoted and older lady 4,000 dollars for what turned out to be a worn out O-ring. No thank you.
