Converting a basement into an apartment is a great way to earn some extra money and to help with the rampant housing shortage in New York City, but if you perform the conversion incorrectly without the help of licensed professionals, including licensed plumbers, electricians and building contractors, you could find yourself with an illegal basement in NY.

Had a gas leak in an apt. I needed a licensed master plumber to fix the leak, file the work permit, pressure test the gas line & schedule the DOB inspection. I called a few plumbers and felt John was the most knowledge and fairly priced. Usually during estimates, I would meet an owner of a construction, electrical, or plumbing company and agree on a price.
I rarely see them again. They usually send one of their employees to do the job. Not John, you hire him.you see him, you deal with him. That blew my mind. I'm use to putting my trust into experienced licensed pros and them sending inferior employees to do the real work. I was so glad John was there every step of the way to help me get my gas back on.
He always stayed in contact and showed up every single time. I must have spent over 10 hours with him (btw his stories are amazing). His knowledge of plumbing is vast and he is a rare find in these times. He is an up front no BS type of old school plumber.

I found him online, Craigslist to be precise! He has ad on Craigslist almost daily with smiley face My mistake, honest and skillful people don't need to advertise so much He didn't show up even we made an arrangement. (I do understand because of Covid, busy schedule etc.) I called him and he came by next day I needed water lines to be connected-We just replaced old equipment with new ones It seems like he is interested in VIOLATIONS to cash in quickly.
When I told him no violations, no filings, just replacement, his face got sour! I have been doing construction for 15 years and I am very disappointed If you are looking for someone to do dirty work, connect pipes, dig in etc., look else where. I agree Matthew Reischer, something is wrong with his INTERPERSONAL PROFESSIONAL LEVEL

When I have a gas problem in my property, It really gives me a headache. Knowing nothing about plumbing and gas, I did extensive research and come across John Farr via my Google search. I made an appointment with him and he came right away. He is very helpful, reliable, and easy to talk to. Then I also have another problem and John help me as well.
It's not the same problem but he gave me a lot of idea to solve the problem. The price is reasonable and John is very professional and knowledgeable. I 100% recommend John Farr for all your plumbing services. Great man, very reliable and caring.

I called John because I had 2 violations in my house and I had no idea what to do. I was searching online and I came across John's website (and let me tell you something), I'm so grateful to God I came into contact with John. He has helped me so much by getting the right person, and helping me in removing my violation. It doesn't matter what problem you may have, if he can't do it on his own, he may refer you to someone else. John is the best!

Not a good experience at all. That said, I did not ultimately contract with Mr. Farr. Maybe others will have a positive experience. John came to my property due to a leak in my basement. He inspected the area and indicated that he believed he could repair the leak but would like to see the upstairs area in case he was unable to access the leak from basement.
This seemed reasonable so I called my first floor tenant and the tenant said he needed 10 minutes to clean up. John said he could not wait and would return later in the day. John arrived later in the day and examined my tenants apartment and said he would do the job for $800. John comes across competent and based on his Google reviews and his $800 price I intended to enter into contract. John said I needed to tender 50% monies, which seemed excessive, but I figured ok.
While he went to his car to write up a receipt I called my family and explained the job would be $800 and my family agreed that sounded reasonable. John returns with standard yellow invoice and all that is written was "$400 paid". I pulled out $400 and look at the invoice and ask "Can you write that the job is $800?". John immediately flashes anger/frustration and expresses that he doesn't need my job and who knows once he opens the basement ceiling what the job will be because he might need to break a wall upstairs.
I am taken back by his attitude and tone but still feel he is the right man for the job. I ask Jon further questions about the likelihood of his ability to do the job from the basement at the $800 price and ask him how much it will cost if he needs to break the wall upstairs. John appears frustrated by my questions and indicates he doesn't need my job and I have to trust him that he will do his best to solve the problem from the basement but that if he needs to break the wall upstairs it can be a $2000 - $3000 job. Ok, I think to myself, I understand that he wont know the scope of the job until he begins (that makes sense) and I still have every intention of hiring him.
I indicate to John I need to call my family because my understanding of the job has changed from when I spoke with them 5 minutes earlier. Although I am the decision maker on the job I still confer on advice when making family decisions. John says "so you are not the one who makes the decision?" I explain to John that while he was writing the receipt I called my family and explained the job differently from how he just explained and I need to call them, and have a quick conversation. John takes a step back and says "I don't want your job".
I honestly at this point am becoming angry myself. John's professional demeanor is awful and he seems to be implying my indicating I need to call my family bothers him for some reason. Ultimately, I wasted a full day speaking to an unprofessional plumber who doesnt understand that (A) no one owes him the belief he operates in good faith, especially when he refuses to memorialize in writing HIS OWN TERMS OF AGREEMENT and (B) rudely implies that my desire to consult with my family on a decision is somehow a personal affront. My personal opinion is AVOID. Something wrong here at the interpersonal professional level.

When a gas leak was found at my house in The Bronx, my place got booted like a scofflaw car on the street. Once the lock on the line and dreaded red tag from Con Ed appeared I didn't know what to do. I looked up John Farr and dialed. I had no idea that what would seem like a quagmire of lost money and confusion turned into an incredible experience.
At first I was intimidated by the work that I had to contribute to getting the gas turned back on but very quickly it felt like John was looking out for me and we joined forces to tackle the problem. He was always punctual, polite, insightful, honest, and very skilled. His understand of plumbing and New York's nuances was incredible. I really enjoyed John's personality and was absolutely satisfied with his work. He has a customer for life and I'd be happy to send work his way anytime going forward-thank you John.

I contacted John as he was recommended by a co-worker, this was the best decision I could have made! John is very profession and honest, he did an amazing job at my home and handled the whole violation and repair with accuracy and in a timely manner. His price is extremely fair and the work done was excellent! I can rest now knowing that the DOB matter is all finally taken care of. I highly recommend John Farr and so happy the violation matter is finally over! Thank you John so much!

I called John Farr because he did work for my house years ago. When I called this time because I had a plumbing issue with another plumber, John Farr Plumbing and H Corp. helped immediately and even made a phone call to the other plumbing company. Then he called me just to make sure the issue was being taken care of. It is great that after so many years later there is still a reliable company that still exist.

My parents had a NYC violation and John came to the rescue. I do not normally write reviews, but this guy deserves the business. He returned calls immediately. No contractor/plumber does that. He was very professional and honest. He did the work on time, showed up when he said he would. No gimmicks. My mom was extremely nervous about the work. During and after John's workmanship calmed her down. I would highly recommend John Farr.

John Farr is a great reliable plumber that I've used for 10 years for my houses in Queens. He always comes the next morning when I call, does a good job and doesn't try to jack up the price or find other expensive "problems" to fix. He always returns my call if he doesn't answer right away. He's got all the licenses and insurance and all that, but I use him because he provides small-town service in this big city.
Some plumbers I've used won't remember my face a month after they've done the job, but John always remembers my family and what he did the last time he came (which, because he does a great job, isn't often). I couldn't recommend him more highly.

I have used many plumbers throughout my time living in NYC. This company has been absolutely exceptional in the level of service he provided at my home. John Farr called me back right away. He was extremely polite, prompt and courteous. The problem was fixed very quickly and he didn't charge me an arm and a leg. I was legalizing my basement and had to remove several Department of Buildings violations. He removed the violations for me and did a great job. He charged a lot less than the other estimates I got for the job.
